A world-famous, diamond-encrusted Rolex 6062 was commissioned directly by the last Emperor of Vietnam, known as the Bao Dai (or Keeper of Greatness), in 1954 Geneva.

Spring of 1954, Geneva. Following the Indochina war, the world powers meet in Switzerland to negotiate with the Viet Minh on the future of Vietnam. During a recess, a man steps out of the Hotel des Bergues, where informal negotiations were taking place, to get some fresh air. He doesn’t know it yet, but his country will soon be split in two and he will be known as the Last Emperor of Vietnam.

The Emperor’s request is a simple one: He wants the rarest and most precious Rolex ever made.

He decides to take a stroll but his footsteps take him only across the street to Chronomètrie Philippe Beguin, a famed Rolex retailer. The Emperor’s request to the staff is a simple one. He wants the rarest and most precious Rolex ever made. Before the numerous refusals of the different models presented to him, Rolex is called to the rescue and a clerk is rapidly dispatched from the Rolex workshops in the outskirts of Geneva, bringing with him a rare timepiece: the Rolex reference 6062 in yellow gold, with a black dial and diamond indexes.

A timepiece that will forever be associated with the Last Emperor of Vietnam, even taking his name: Bao Dai.

Nguyễn Phúc Vĩnh Thụy was the 13th and last emperor of the Nguyễn Dynasty. It was not until he ascended the throne in 1925 at age 12 that he was granted the title of Bao Dai — Keeper of Greatness. Bao Dai championed reforms in the judicial and educational systems, and tried to end the more outdated trappings of Vietnamese royalty. He ended the ancient Mandarin custom that once required aides to touch their foreheads to the ground when addressing the Emperor.

Not only a man of wealth, Bao Dai was also a man of taste. He commissioned the greatest artisans of the time to create superb unique creations fit for an Emperor, may it be a villa, private yacht or car. (He notably owned a famed Ferrari 375 MM Spyder rebodied by Scaglietti to a blue/silver Tour de France.) He wanted the best, and had the eye and finesse to recognize it.

This elusive Rolex 6062, cased in yellow gold, is one of only three black dial models known to be set with diamond markers. While two examples feature six diamond markers for odd hour numbers, this particular lot from The Geneva Watch Auction: FIVE displays five diamond numerals for even numbers and a different dial layout, making this piece truly unique. It is interesting to note that due to the diamond numeral at 12 o’clock, the Rolex crown was moved down, consequently making it impossible to have the “Rolex Oyster Perpetual” above the day and month apertures. The “Officially Certified Chronometer” wording was also removed from the center of the dial and placed below the moonphase indication.

This timepiece is not only extremely desirable due to its imperial provenance, but is also a condensate of Rolex‘s genetic code: the iconic Oyster case, a Rolex “perpetual” in-house movement and of course the ultimate rarity of a full calendar complication featuring a moonphase display. The reference 6062 embodies what Rolex stands for without a shred of compromise.

The “Bao Dai” first appeared on the market in 2002, consigned by the family of the Emperor, where it was already sold by Phillips for a record breaking CHF 370’000, making it the most expensive Rolex ever sold at the time. We are delighted to offer this Rolex milestone 15 years later, from the collection of the second owner. The watch is still in spectacular, untouched and unrestored condition.

Its imperial provenance, rarity and superb condition make the “Bao Dai” one of the most valuable timepieces ever produced regardless of the brand.

The Geneva Watch Auction Four di Phillips verrà certamente ricordata come l’asta dei record. Certo, ognuno di questi eventi ha sempre un o due top lots dove si può stabilire un primato, ma in questo caso la situazione è diversa. Molto raramente nello stesso catalogo si possono realizzare tre primati con tre “masterpiece” assoluti. Si tratta tre referenze 1518 Patek Philippe: una in acciaio, una in oro rosa e una in oro giallo.

La Ref. 1518 è stata lanciata nel 1941 e segna l’inizio di un’era per Patek Philippe. Non solo è stato il primo orologio da polso di Patek ad aver mai unito insieme un cronografo e un calendario perpetuo, ma è stato anche il primo al mondo ad essere stato realizzato in serie. Questo modello rivoluzionario è il traguardo per ogni collezionista e quando lo si trova in tali splendide condizioni si trasforma in un vero e proprio trofeo con solo quattro esemplari in acciaio, la maggioranza in oro giallo e una piccola quantità in oro rosa. Nel corso di 14 anni di produzione sono stati realizzati un totale di 281 esemplari, di cui solo 34 in oro rosa.

Questa referenza aggiudicata a 1,474,000 franchi svizzeri (€1.373.ooo) nel corso della sua esistenza non ha mai subito lucidature o manutenzioni frequenti conservandosi in condizioni ideali. Sul ponte del bilanciere è stampato “HOX”, indicando che l’orologio è stato destinato al mercato americano. Emile Vichet S.A. responsabile per la produzione delle casse di alcune delle referenze più ambite di Patek Philippe, firma anche questa come si evince dalle sigle incise all’interno del fondello.

La rarità, l’esclusività, e le ottime condizioni di questo segnatempo sono ulteriormente rafforzate dalla sua provenienza senza precedenti. H.H. Windsor Jr. (1898-1965) era figlio del fondatore della rivista Popular Mechanics e un collezionista appassionato di orologi. Dopo la morte del padre nel 1924, all’età di 26 anni, H.H. Windsor Jr. divenne direttore ed editore della rivista. Sotto la sua guida, la diffusione crebbe a 2 milioni di copie.
Questa referenza come si evince da ciò che è inciso sul fondello è stata data in dono a H.H. Windsor Jr. dai suoi colleghi, soci e dipendenti per festeggiare il 50° anniversario della rivista l’11 gennaio 1952.

Ed ecco a voi l’orologio da polso più costoso mai venduto all’asta. Il Patek Philippe Ref. 1518 cronografo con calendario perpetuo è stato venduto ieri sera per 11,002 milioni di CHF (più di 10,2 milioni di euro) da Phillips Bacs & Russo a Ginevra, prezzo comprensivo di oneri dell’acquirente. L’asta è stata contesa da una decina di offerenti ed il prezzo di aggiudicazione finale è stato 9,6 milioni di franchi. Il 1518 conquista il titolo di più costoso orologio da polso al mondo “rubandolo” al Patek Philippe ref. 5016 che lo ha conquistato un anno fa.

Nel 1941, durante i disordini della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, un piccolo ma importante evento ebbe luogo luogo a Basilea in Svizzera, qualcosa che ha cambiato per sempre la manifattura orologiera svizzera. Fu alla Swiss Watch Fair di Basilea (Baselworld oggi), che Patek Philippe introdusse quello che divenne un orologio da polso rivoluzionario la referenza 1518.

Fu il primo cronografo con calendario perpetuo da polso mai prodotto in serie da qualsiasi casa e, data l’incertezza politica del tempo, Patek Philippe dimostrò un notevole coraggio. Si trattò di una vera e propria pietra miliare nella storia dell’orologeria che poneva le basi per il dominio della Patek Philippe nell’alta gamma dell’orologeria svizzera.

Da sempre in anticipo sui tempi, Patek Philippe ha continuato ad usare la sua estetica senza tempo come base per una lunga serie di orologi complicati di successo come le referenze 2499, 3970, 5970, e 75 anni più tardi, ancora oggi la 5270. Patek Philippe produsse 281 esemplari di 1518, la stragrande maggioranza in oro giallo, 55 in oro rosa e solo 4 sono noti nella versione in acciaio.

Solo dagli anni ’70 Patek Philippe ha cominciato a produrre regolarmente orologi in acciaio in numero significante. Oro e altri metalli nobili erano di gran lunga più utilizzati per ospitare questi prestigiosi. Solo raramente venivano richiesti esemplari in acciaio in particolare da professionisti, come medici e ingegneri che desideravano associare ai pregiatissimi calibri robuste casse che potevano convivere con la loro attività spesso frenetica e ricca di spostamenti.

L’acciaio è quindi di gran lunga il materiale più raro che Patek Philippe abbia scelto di utilizzare per quasi tutto il XX secolo per i suoi orologi complicati considerando il valore estremamente elevato dei movimenti. Ed è questa, la scarsità assoluta, che oggi fa sì che il valore di questa Referenza 1518 possa candidarsi per stabilire il più alto record mai registrato per un orologio da polso in asta.

Oggi, la referenza 1518 è un’icona grazie al suo stile classico e la sua eleganza senza tempo; possedere uno è considerato l’obiettivo massimo raggiungibile per un collezionista di complicati Patek Philippe. Si tratta di orologi da polso che sono considerati e valutati come vere e proprie opere d’arte e possederne un esemplare è un privilegio di cui pochi fortunati possono godere.

A highly successful entrepreneur and inventor – he has in the neighborhood of 80 patents in his name – his professional successes afforded him the opportunity to combine his interests in design and manufacturing with his love for the automobile. His collection today, celebrated as one of the world’s leading car collections, is a labor of love for both Sam and his wife of 45 years, Emily. Come solitamente accade, le Maison più blasonate caratterizzano il tempo con le loro creazioni, e questo oggetto dalla cassa riconoscibilissima ed ormai più che meritatamente entrata nella storia, ne è un’esempio lampante. Stiamo parlando del Patek Philippe Ref. 2441 o meglio conosciuto come: Tour Eiffel.

La produzione di questa referenza è iniziata nel 1948 proseguendo per un decennio. Molto raffinato e raro, la sua particolare cassa rettangolare “poggia” su anse a base quadrata dalla forma curvilinea a ricordare, neanche troppo vagamente, i quattro pilastri che sostengono la Torre Eiffel.

Patek Philippe ha avviato la produzione della referenza 2441 nel 1948 e l’ha proseguita almeno fino al 1955 con un totale di circa 150/200 pezzi realizzati. Ciò fa di questo oggetto l’obbiettivo di molti collezionisti poiché gli esemplari noti al mercato (e in particolare modo in queste condizioni) non supera qualche dozzina.

Solo per sottolinearne l’importanza storica, nel 1997 Patek Philippe produsse l’edizione limitata “Pagoda” con referenza 5500 per celebrare la nuova sede di Ginevra. Non a caso la Ref. 2441 fu fonte di chiara ispirazione per questa produzione contemporanea.

Over the centuries, the world’s most ingenious watchmakers and engineers have graced us
with dazzling and bewildering complications. May these complications enhance precision such as tourbillons, offer an acoustic delight such as minute repeaters or squeeze the cosmos into rotating pinions and gears such as perpetual calendars and moon phases, few are at the same time speaking to the hidden adventurer within us, action loaded and visible as the chronograph.

From the Greek “chronos” meaning time and “graph” meaning to write, the chronograph measures and records time intervals stated in seconds (and sometimes even less), minutes and/or hours.

However, the chronograph also embodies one of mankind’s greatest – yet unattainable dreams – that to control and stop time. However, what it does allow is to freeze a moment, preserve it for posterity and to look back with consideration.

It is of no surprise that doctors, scientists, sportsmen and members of the armed forces have relied on their trusty chronographs in the course of their daily lives, their successes (and sometimes failures) recorded by their timepiece. Where life does not offer the possibility to stop time it does sometimes offer a second chance and as with chronographs to reset and start again. A second opportunity to overcome a failure, to repeat a success and sometimes, to break a new record. Thus the name of this thematic auction: START-STOP-RESET.

Rome, January 2016. During a dinner with Pucci Papaleo we started discussing a thematic sale focussing on tool watches, those most likely to have been used in action loaded, rough and exciting environments and by dessert the theme of stainless steel chronograph wristwatches, the date of the auction, the scope and responsibilities were decided upon! Curating this sale was a fascinating journey for the specialists at Phillips Watches. A true team effort shared with our friend Pucci Papaleo whom, after the Glamorous Day-Date auction, needs no further introduction.

The team includes Andrea Foffi who kindly shared his encyclopaedic knowledge and prepared many of the watches for photography, Fabio Santinelli, whom many consider the world’s most talented photographer of watches, supported by Gino La Bella for image management, Paolo Gobbi, an extremely talented contributing writer and finally Naomi Ornstein as general coordinator… and believe me, the need for a coordinator was vital!

Choosing is renouncing and we had to regretfully refuse highly interesting pieces that either did not meet our extremely stringent quality criteria or duplicated another consigned piece. We wanted to offer you the broadest variety in terms of brands, styles and period and each model needed to tell a captivating story. The result being a catalogue reuniting over 80 classic, legendary, rare and attractive examples from the world’s most prominent chronograph makers.

Being chronographs aside, all the timepieces shown in this catalogue have in common that they are not only technically and visually stimulating but are historically relevant, having survived in amazing original condition, decades after they left the workshops and happily accompanied their wearers, may they have been sportsmen, doctors or members of the armed forces.

Fin dall’inizio le linee Rolex si sono contraddistinte per la loro eleganza e raffinatezza, mai fuori posto sempre concettualmente coerenti ai canoni d’eleganza del periodo. Canoni che spesso hanno forgiato leggi scritte sulla pietra, regole cui ancora aggi ci si attiene quando si parla di alta arte orologiera.

L’esemplare che oggi è sul nostro shop riassume in se un pò tutte queste caratteristiche. Si tratta di un Rolex Tank referenza 912 in oro bianco 18k. Questo magnifico timepiece prende la sua forma ereditandola dai Rolex Prince rettangolari e la trasforma in questa che rappresenta tipicamente i Tank: una cassa square dai profili cushion.

Quello che stupisce sono le condizioni eccezionali in cui si trova, fantastiche per un orologio che sta per compiere i suoi primi cent’anni. Frugando in rete sono veramente pochi gli esemplari rimasti ma in ogni caso è difficilissimo trovarne uno in condizioni simili. Infatti oggi, questo orologio splende ancora come negli anni ruggenti che trascorrevano al battito del suo tempo.
