Rare British motorcycles head to Bonhams Stafford Sale on the 15th and 16th October with the Croft-Cameron Super Eight leading an exceptional line-up of vintage, classic and racing machines.

1924 Croft-Cameron 996cc Super Eight – estimate £160,000-200,000

‘Look! Speedmen, Hard Riders, and all such Sportsmen. At last you have the Ideal of your dreams. The Croft Anzani “Super Eight”.’ – Croft Cameron (The Motor Cycle, March 1923)

The Croft-Cameron Super Eight ranks among the super-sports big twins of the 1920s and ‘30s. The Coventry based Croft Cameron company enjoyed a short but sweet existence between 1923 and 1926, producing striking and powerful machines for the very top of the market. This rare example of their design, which debuted in 1923, is estimated at £160,000-200,000.

James Stensel, Head of Bonhams Collectors’ Motorcycles says: ‘Our motorcycle dedicated sales are synonymous with the world’s finest machines of yesteryear. This autumn’s sale has attracted some truly remarkable entries including an exceedingly rare Croft-Cameron Super Eight with elegant lines and sporting prowess – a potent machine in the right hands.

Bonhams brings several other fantastic super sport twins to the Stafford Sale. These include the 1925 Zenith 981cc Super 8 (estimate £28,000-34,000) featuring a JAP KTCY 4 cam engine from a Brough Superior SS80/100 and a 1937 Brough Superior 1,096cc 11-50hp Motorcycle Combination (estimate £55,000-65,000), first owned by the Sheffield Police.

1907 Vindec Special 5hp & Graham Brothers Sidecar, estimate £30,000-40,000

More than 230 lots are set to cross the Bonhams auction block. These comprise no fewer than 20 veterans, including the 1907 Vindec Special 5hp & Graham Brothers Sidecar (estimate £30,000-40,000) – a rare and striking survivor of a little-known German maker that regularly draws the attention of collectors and enthusiasts across the UK.

The ex-works, NCR, Sports Motor Cycles, Roger Nicholls, Isle of Man TT Formula 1, 1977 Ducati 905cc Production Racing Motorcycle (estimate £55,000-75,000).

Also up for auction is the ‘exceptionally rare’ ex-works, NCR, Sports Motor Cycles, Roger Nicholls, Isle of Man TT Formula 1, 1977 Ducati 905cc Production Racing Motorcycle (estimate £55,000-75,000) and a ‘meticulously restored’ Ex-Texaco Heron Team Suzuki, 1976 Suzuki RG500 XR14 Racing Motorcycle previously owned by Grand Prix rider Rob Bron (estimate £45,000-55,000).

1948 Vincent-HRD 998cc Series-B/C Black Shadow (estimate £50,000-60,000)

Amongst the Vincents on offer is a 1947 Vincent 998cc Rapide Series-B (estimate £38,000-45,000), a unique chance to secure what is believed to be the oldest complete and original post-war Vincent in existence, whilst the 1948 Vincent-HRD 998cc Series-B/C Black Shadow (estimate £50,000-60,000) is one of just 76 Series B Black Shadows produced, putting it on a par with the series A Rapide in terms of rarity

Ben Walker, Bonhams International Departmental Director says: ‘With such a diverse array of entries, we look forward to welcoming the international crowd to Stafford for what is set to be a memorable event’.

Bonhams Autumn Stafford Sale takes place Sunday 16 October at The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show, Staffordshire County Showground. Public viewing 10:00-17:00 Saturday 15 October and from 09:00 Sunday 16 October.

BONHAMS ANNOUNCES SENSATIONAL MOTORCYCLE DISCOVERY

They were believed to have been destroyed, but earlier this year, eight long-lost Brough Superior Motorcycles were discovered in a Cornish village.
Unveiled for the first time in more than 50 years, The Broughs of Bodmin Moor will be offered at Bonhams Sale of Important Collectors’ Motorcycles at Stafford on 24 April 2016.
“This is one of the greatest motorcycle discoveries of recent times,” said Ben Walker, International Director for Bonhams Collectors’ Motorcycle Department. “A lot of mystery surrounds these motorcycles, as very few people knew that they still existed, many believing them to be an urban myth. There was a theory that they still existed somewhere in the West Country, but few knew where, until now.”

“Stored in barns for more than 50 years, the motorcycles were discovered whole, in parts, and some were partially submerged under decades of dust, old machinery parts and household clutter.”

“This is the last known collection of unrestored Brough Superiors; there will not be another opportunity like this. Only eight four-cylinder machines were built, and the example in this collection is the final one to be re-discovered.”
Jonathan Vickers, Bonhams West Country motoring specialist, added, “The discovery of these Brough Motorcycles in Cornwall is historically significant; we’re delighted that these machines will now be offered for sale on an international platform for the first time in more than half a century.”

Brough Superior motorcycles are incredibly rare, powerful machines of the pre-war era. Dubbed the Rolls-Royce of motorcycles, they’re famed as the bike of choice for aficionados such as the playwright George Bernard Shaw, and T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia, owner of eight models.
The late-vendor, Mr. Frank Vague, was an avid member of the Brough Superior Club. He acquired the majority of the collection in the early 1960s; they’ve since remained unused for some 50 years.
“There is a strong market for unrestored, highly original motorcycles,” added Ben Walker. “Bonhams regularly achieves world record breaking figures for Brough Superior motorcycles, including unusual projects, which appeal to the enthusiast and collector of the brand. It would be great to see these back on the road, as they are all restorable.”

The motorcycles which form The Broughs of Bodmin Moor’ Collection are:

Pope Benedict XVI Harley-Davidson to be sold for charity at Bonhams Paris Sale

Una Harley-Davidson con la firma di Papa Benedetto XVI all’asta Bonhams di Parigi del 5 febbraio al Gran Palais con una stima di € 15,000-25,000.

The Pope's Harley Davidson 1,690cc FLSTC 103 Heritage Softail Classic - img3

Pope's Harley Davidson 1,690cc FLSTC 103 Heritage Softail Classic - img1

A Harley-Davidson motorcycle blessed with the signature of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, and later received by Pope Francis, is to be sold for charity at Bonhams 5 February Paris Sale.

The motorcycle is to be offered as part of Bonhams Grand Palais auction, entered at no reserve, with an estimate of €15,000-25,000 (£11,700-19,600). In a special countdown to Harley-Davidson’s 110th anniversary celebrations, two commemorative motorcycle petrol tanks were presented to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

These were signed, and returned to the motorcycle legends US headquarters where they were mounted to their respective motorcycles. Of these, one remains in the Harley-Davidson museum in Milwaukee, USA. The remaining motorcycle – the FLSTC 103 Heritage Softail Classic destined for Bonhams 2015 sale – lay waiting for a special ceremony where it would be presented to the Pope in front of tens-of thousands of Harley-Davidson riders at 2013s 110th anniversary celebration.

However, in an unforeseen change to the papacy, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI abdicated in January 2013. Subsequently this saw the Softail Classic presented to the newly inaugurated Pope, his holiness Pope Francis.

“It’s an honour to have been selected to sell this fantastic machine. We expect a lot of interest, and hope to raise some spirited bidding for the very worthy charity selected,” said Ben Walker, International Director for Bonhams Motorcycle Department.

“In February 2014, Bonhams sold 1,585cc Harley-Davidson Dyna Super Glide signed by His Holiness Pope Francis. Now we’re delighted to offer a motorcycle received by both Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI; it was present during a pivotal period in the papacy of the Catholic Church, and we expect a lot of interest in it.”

Entered at no reserve, this unique motorcycle will have its auction proceeds donated to Stowarzyszenie Przyjazny Świat Dziecka (Friendly World Association), a Polish volunteer, independent, non-profit organization that offers care and support to children and families in need.

The Harley-Davidson will be sold on 5 February 2015 as part of Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde sale at the Grand Palais in Paris.
