ONE OF THE GREAT FERRARI MASTERPIECES LEADS BONHAMS GRAND PALAIS SALE

Bonhams returns to Paris for the annual Grand Palais Sale on 4 February 2016, led by the magnificent 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, estimated at €2,500,000-3,500,000 and offered without reserve.

Developed by marque founder, Enzo Ferrari, the 275 GTB is considered a masterpiece of motor car design. Boasting a V12, 300 bhp engine, it was the successor to the 250 series, spearheaded by the legendary 250 GTO (currently the most valuable motor car sold at auction, following Bonhams $38,115,000 sale of a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO), leading it to be met with great applause when it was introduced at the 1964 Paris Autosalon.

Sleek, muscular, and expertly proportioned, the front-engined, two-door Berlinetta is from the second series of the model’s production, which introduced the longer nosed variant, making it rarer, more aerodynamic, and considerably prettier. Chassis 8973 is one of the ultra desirable ‘torque tube’ models, featuring Pininfarina designed Scaglietti coachwork, complete with matching numbers and continuous history.

Further highlights from the Ferrari stable include a 1990 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta, estimated at €950,000-1,100,000. The F40 was the last model ever approved by founding father, Enzo Ferrari, and when it was launched, it was the most powerful model ever built by the marque – the perfect finale to Enzo Ferrari’s legacy.

Philip Kantor, Bonhams European Head of Motoring, said: “Bonhams Grand Palais Sale returns with more than 150 rare and exciting lots of collectors’ motor cars, motorcycles and automobilia. With several rare and special cars already consigned, we expect another incredible sale at the magnificent Grand Palais.”

Elsewhere, a spectacular 2000 Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupé is offered, estimated at €1,800,000-2,000,000. When Mercedes-Benz first unveiled its CLK GTR in 1998, it sold for an astonishing $1.5 million, making it the most expensive production car ever, a figure only recently exceeded by the Ferrari FXX. Supplied new to Switzerland, chassis number ‘23’ has covered a mere 3,285km, making one of the rarest and most desirable Mercedes-Benz models of modern times in effectively ‘as new’ condition.

Further early consignments to the Grand Palais Sale include a Porsche Carrera GT, estimated at €800,000-1,000,000, a highly original 1975 Lancia Stratos HF Stradale, estimated at €350,000-450,000, a 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Speedster with less than 950km from new, estimated at €250,000-350,000, and an ultra rare original left hand drive 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III Drophead Coupé, estimated at €380,000-540,000.

“THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD”:13 RARE ROLLS-ROYCE MOTOR CARS AT BONHAMS DENMARK SALE

• Bonhams single-owner Frederiksen Collection Sale features 13 outstanding classic Rolls-Royce motor cars
• The sale on 26 September will be the first time Bonhams conducts an auction in Denmark. The location for this historic auction will be a picturesque 16^th-century manor house Lyngsbækgaard, set in the Mols Bjerge national park near Aarhus, Denmark, that belongs to the owner of the collection, Henrik Frederiksen

It’s a rare treat to own a Rolls-Royce, and quite a feat to own more than one. Henrik Frederiksen is the proud owner of an incredible thirteen Rolls-Royce motor cars, each to be offered at Bonhams single-owner Frederiksen Collection Sale, taking place 26 September. 

Highlight of the series is the 1914 Rolls-Royce 40/50 Silver Ghost Skiff, estimate 7,200,000-9,200,000 DKK (£675,000-875,000). At over one hundred years old, the 40/50 H.P. Silver Ghost chassis is regarded by many as the model that earned Rolls-Royce the sobriquet “the best car in the world”. Incredibly well travelled, it has been enjoyed by previous owners residing in France, Brussels, Cairo, London and California. Today, 54PB presents beautifully with lovely patina and a high degree of originality.

Also offered is an outstanding 1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Open Tourer – estimate 2,000,000-2,600,000 DKK (£175,000-250,000). The Phantom was once owned by famous Suffragette, Katharine McCormick. An American philanthropist, Mrs. McCormick is renowned for single-handedly financing the development of the birth control pill.

Reputedly the last model that Henry Royce designed himself, the Phantom II was announced in September 1929 with deliveries commencing immediately. Unlike its predecessor, which inherited its underpinnings from the preceding 40/50HP Silver Ghost model, the Phantom II employed an entirely new chassis laid out along the lines of that of the smaller 20HP Rolls-Royce. Built in two wheelbase lengths, this new low-slung frame enabled coachbuilders to design a sleeker, more modern body for the car.

Bonhams becomes the official auction partner of the Ferrari Owners’ Club of Great Britain

 

Bonhams International auctioneers are delighted to announce their appointment as the official auction partner for the Ferrari Owners’ Club of Great Britain in a new three year agreement.

Bonhams record-breaking motoring department consistently achieve excellent prices for Ferrari models. This includes the world record for the most valuable car in history to be sold at auction – the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta, sold for $38,115,000 (£22,843,633).
The GTO is one in a long line of models from the ‘prancing horse’ that Bonhams have sold at auction, including the remainder of the Maranello Rosso Collection of ten important Ferraris, sold for a combined total $65,945,000 (£39,522,440).

Keith Richards’ Bentley for sale at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale next 12 September in Chichester

BONHAMS OFFER THE BENTLEY THAT TOOK KEITH RICHARDS AND ANITA PALLENBERG ON DRUG FUELLED MARRAKECH TRIP

In the swinging sixties, each member of the Rolling Stones had his own statement vehicle – a car that announced the arrival of a rock star. For Keith Richards, this car was a beautiful blue Bentley S3 Continental ‘Flying Spur’, a car that he affectionately named ‘Blue Lena’ after legendary jazz musician, Lena Horne.

In 1965, Richards purchased the car new from London dealer H.R. Owen, and later had it modified with a secret compartment in which he and the band could conceal their much loved, and highly illegal, narcotics. In the heady days of the Rolling Stones’ early fame, the car not only transported the band to various parties and gigs, but also took them on some astonishing adventures around Europe, and most famously, North Africa.

“It was a car meant to be driven fast at night,” Richards said, in his 2010 autobiography, Life. “My dark blue Bentley, my S3 Continental Flying Spur – an automobile of some rarity, one of a limited edition of 87. Having this car was already heading for trouble, breaking the rules of the establishment, driving a car I was definitely not born in to. ‘Blue Lena’ had carried us on many an acid-fuelled journey.”

In 1967, police raided Keith Richards’s country home, Redlands, an estate in West Wittering, Sussex, just a stone’s throw away from Goodwood where Blue Lena will now be sold. As the police arrived the band were in the middle of one of their famously hedonistic parties, and were found high on various illegal substances. Notoriously, Marianne Faithfull, Mick Jagger’s then girlfriend, was found lying on a sofa, wearing nothing but a fur rug, prompting the infamous newspaper headline: ‘Nude Girl at Stones Party’.

Richards was charged with possession of illegal substances. In the run up to his court date, and no doubt to escape the media buzz, he and the band decided to go on an overseas adventure, to a place where drugs were, at the time, more freely available – Marrakech.

Whilst Jagger and Marianne Faithfull flew in, Richards and Brian Jones decided to go with Blue Lena, along with model Anita Pallenberg, Jones’ girlfriend at the time, and friend Deborah Dixon.

Early on in the 1,800 journey Jones, his tempestuous relationship with Pallenberg at breaking point, was struck down with pneumonia and hospitalised in Albi, France.  Dixon was the next to go – in Barcelona – leaving Richards and Pallenberg alone in Blue Lena marking the beginning of a relationship which only ended, three children and 23 years later, in 1980.

James Knight, Bonhams Group Motoring Director, said: “Richards sold Blue Lena in 1978, and it has since changed hands just three times. Following a five-year restoration, Blue Lena has been returned to its former glory, and will be offered at Bonhams Goodwood Revival Sale – very near to the scene of that famous 1967 raid – at estimate £400,000-600,000.”
