Qualche tempo fa mi sono imbattuto in questo post (motorauthority) che mostrava una Mustang Cobra Shelby GT500 del 1969 con solo 8500 miglia pressoché sommersa dalla polvere. Era il lascito di un uomo senza eredi. E’ stata venduta ad un’asta pubblica in Pennsylvania il 25 Aprile scorso.
Dalla morte del leggendario Carroll Shelby, avvenuta nel 2012, quest’auto e le altre della produzione Cobra Shelby, hanno incrementato enormemente il loro valore e sono oggi protagoniste di aste all’ultimo sangue. La GT500 è una auto senza compromessi e senza bisogno di presentazioni. Il sogno di ogni americano ma anche di molti europei. Protagonista di scene spericolate nei film americani degli anni ’60 e ’70 e simbolo di un epoca storica per l’auto americana.
La Shelby American già dalla sua prima creazione, la A.C. Cobra, entrò di diritto nel firmamento dell’automobilismo mondiale con Carroll Shelby come profeta. Da allora il suo nome è sinonimo di auto puramente sportive, dalle linee muscolose e aggressive. La GT40 resta il punto più alto di una produzione tanto breve quanto eccezionale. Tre capolavori assoluti, un concentrato di forza e fascino che hanno tracciato un solco indelebile nel panorama dell’automobilismo sportivo.
La Cobra GT500 venne presentata nel 1967 come evoluzione della GT350, con un poderoso motore da 7 litri Big-block V8 FE Police Interceptor da oltre 400 cv. Negli anni ‘60, con l’esplosione delle muscle car, i motori Big-Block (V8 maggiori di 6000 cc) vennero montati su vetture di dimensioni medie. Ma questa tendenza crollò dopo la crisi petrolifera del 1973, e così i gloriosi anni dei Big-Block e delle muscle car terminarono e furono per sempre consegnati alla storia.
Delle 2048 Mustang Cobra Shelby GT500 prodotte nel ‘67 quella che presentiamo oggi è una delle 672 a trasmissione automatica e delle 8 che montano l’aria condizionata. E’ una delle ultime prodotte da Carroll Shelby presso la leggendaria sede del Los Angeles International Airport poiché nel 1968 la produzione delle Shelby venne spostata allo stabilimento Ford di Iona, Michigan dove venne prodotta la versione GT390, famosa per il film “Bullit“, con Steve McQueen.

Questa magnifica GT500 blu si trova in condizioni perfette ed è dotata di tutti gli optional dell’epoca come servosterzo e servofreno, sedili posteriori pieghevoli, radio, cerchi Shelby, rollbar e naturalmente l’aria condizionata e il cambio automatico che ne fanno un rarissimo esemplare che si stima possa oltrepassare i $150.000 dollari di valore. Few time ago I read this post (MotorAuthority) that showed a Shelby Cobra GT500 1969 with only 8500 miles almost submerged in the dust. It was the legacy of a man with no heirs. It was sold at a public auction in Pennsylvania on April 25 last year.
Since the death of the legendary Carroll Shelby, passed away in 2012, this car and the others of the Shelby Cobra production, have dramatically increased their value.

The Cobra GT500 was introduced in 1967 as an evolution of the GT350, with a 7-liter engine Big-block V8 FE Police Interceptor for more then 400 hp. In the 60s, with the success of the muscle car, the Big-Block engine (V8 above 6000 cc) were mounted on middle size cars. But this trend collapsed after the oil crisis of 1973, and so the glorious years of the Big-Block and muscle car finished and were forever consigned to history.
Of the 2048 Mustang Cobra Shelby GT500 produced in ’67, the one that we present today is one of the 672 automatic transmission and 8 fitted with air conditioning. And one of the last produced by Carroll Shelby at the legendary Los Angeles International Airport. By 1968 the production was moved to the Ford plant in Iona, Michigan where it was produced the GT390 version, famous for the movie “Bullit” with Steve McQueen.
This GT500 is in perfect condition and comes with all the original optionals, such as power steering and power brakes, folding rear seats, radio, Shelby wheels, roll-bar, and of course air conditioning and automatic transmission, making it a super rare example which is estimated to exceed $ 150,000 in value.
