“I had the great pleasure of working with Charlton Heston back in 1998 when he sat down with me to record a Private Screenings interview for Turner Classic Movies. Right from the start, he asked me to call him Chuck. Not Charlton or Mr. Heston. And certainly not Charlie. Only his wife was allowed to do that. What followed soon after was a pleasant, affable conversation —although I couldn’t help but think that any infraction of the rules would inspire a clap of thunder, a burning bush or a major earth tremor. And why not? He was, after all, a guy who was known to either cause or survive any number of lightning bolts, earthquakes and other calamities, at least on screen. So why risk it? I called him Chuck. Meeting Chuck in person made you realize immediately that he was the kind of guy you hoped he would be—a straight-shooter, a thinking man, sturdy, dependable and professional. He was also a shy man one who overcame that shyness because of the nature of his business, but still deep down a shy man. So I imagine he’d be a little baffled to think that people would want to purchase his personal memorabilia included in this auction.

But even he admitted the very nature of his work made people look up to him in a way that reflected the impact of the characters he played— rather than the real Chuck Heston. After all he played some imposing men: Moses, Judah Ben-Hur, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, John the Baptist, Michelangelo. As he told me in our interview— these were individuals who did remarkable things and it tends to rub off a little bit. Well I for one think Chuck was being a little too self-effacing because the fact of the matter is, he was a very good actor, a devoted husband and family man, social activist and, in my experience, a genuinely nice person. Thankfully, we’ll always have his films to remember him by— and if the bidding goes your way, perhaps you can have a piece of his memorabilia to remember him by in your own way”.

Era anche un uomo timido uno che ha superato la timidezza grazie al suo lavoro, ma ancora in fondo un uomo timido. Quindi immagino che sarebbe stato un po’ perplesso a sapere che il pubblico sarebbe stato interessato ad acquistare gli oggetti inseriti in quest’asta.
Ma onestamente non posso nascondere di essere stato influenzato dal pensiero di avere di fronte l’attore Charlton Heston. Dopo tutto ha interpretato ruoli imponenti: Mosè, Ben-Hur, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Michelangelo. Era un ottimo attore, un marito e padre di famiglia devoto, attivista sociale e, come se non bastasse, un bellissimo uomo. Per fortuna, avremo sempre i suoi film per ricordarlo e se sei fortunato, forse riuscirai ad avere un suo oggetto per ricordarlo a modo tuo. In bocca al lupo”.

Now on the Shop: the Heuer Monaco Steve McQueen ref. 1133

Il nome di Steve McQueen viene universalmente legato al mondo dei motori e con essi ad alcuni orologi ormai culto tra gli appassionati. Come ad esempio l’Heuer Monaco. Tutto è nato durante le riprese del film effettuate nel corso della 24ore di Le Mans del 1970. Per essere meglio credibile nella parte del personaggio che interpretava, Steve ha consultato un suo amico: il pilota svizzero e ambasciatore Heuer e Gulf, Jo Siffert. Su richiesta di McQueen, Siffert ha prestato all’attore la sua tuta bianca che recava la scritta “Heuer” sul petto e i colori Gulf. Per completare il look, McQueen ha scelto di indossare nel film il nuovo Heuer Monaco. Da allora, il modello è stato denominato il “McQueen Monaco”. Purtroppo Siffert morì l’anno successivo durante una gara che celebrava il secondo titolo di Jackie Stewart. L’ultima auto che “Jo” guidò alla 24 ore di Le Mans fu la stessa Porsche 917 LH azzurro arancio sponsorizzata Gulf guidata da Steve nel film Le Mans.

In aggiunta a questa cornice puramente Racing, l’innovativa cassa quadrata fu una svolta radicale rispetto ai quadranti rotondi degli anni ’60. Anche se la produzione è stata interrotta verso la metà degli anni 1970, una replica del Monaco è stata presentata con un nuovo design nel 1998 in risposta alla crescente popolarità di McQueen. Le prime versioni dell’originale furono prodotte con due diverse combinazioni di colori. La prima (rappresentata dalla lettera B sulla referenza) aveva un quadrante blu. La seconda (rappresentato dalla lettera G) aveva un quadrante grigio.

Il modello con quadrante grigio è il meno popolare tra i collezionisti. La referenza 1133 Heuer Monaco fu presentata contemporaneamente a Ginevra e a New York nel 1969. Fu il primo cronografo a micro-carica automatica resitente all acqua. Il nome di McQueen continua ad essere associato con l’orologio. TAG Heuer ha capitalizzato la sua popolarità e utilizza sequenze filmate di McQueen con al polso il Monaco nelle sue campagne pubblicitarie. La presenza tra i collezionisti di un esemplare in ottime condizioni è estremamente rara e quello in vendita nello shop è un prima serie. Cassa a scatto a due pezzi monoblocco con pulsanti a pompa, il quadrante è l’originale “B” con indici al trizio, movimento a carica automatica calibro Buren 11.

Hollywood Icons & Music Legends – Christie’s Pop Culture Sale december 16, 2014

South Kensington – Il 16 dicembre a South Kensington si terrà l’asta Pop Culture di Christie, presentando cimeli della storia del Rock, Pop e del cinema. La vendita celebra alcuni dei più grandi nomi del cinema del 20° secolo, leggende della musica di oggi, costumi e gli script di film, strumenti e testi delle canzoni scritti a mano e altro ancora. Il catalogo al completo sarà in mostra presso la galleria Old Brompton Road a South Kensington dal 13 al 16 dicembre 2014. Le stime vanno da £ 800 a £ 300.000.

Un elaborato e suggestivo costume in stile “harem” indossato da Marilyn Monroe in un servizio fotografico del celebre fotografo Richard Avedon è il top lot del catalogo (stima: £ 300.000-500.000). Il costume indossato dall’attrice è stato pubblicato sul numero di dicembre 1958 della rivista Life. La Monroe si fece ritrarre nel tentativo di convincere il presidente della Fox ad affidargli la parte di Cleopatra nel colossal che invece vide in quella parte Liz Taylor.

I fan della serie Terminator hanno la rara opportunità di aggiudicarsi il mitico giubbotto in pelle nera indossato da Arnold Schwarzenegger  nel film “Terminator 2: Il giorno del giudizio” (stima: £ 18,000-25,000). Questa giacca, con la scritta “ARNOLD” all’interno, ha numerosi fori di proiettile ed è stata utilizzata durante le riprese nella scena nel centro commerciale, quando Terminator per proteggere John Connor dal fuoco del T-1000 è ripetutamente colpito dalle pallottole nella parte posteriore.

Un rarissimo prototipo di chitarra elettrica Gretsch Irish Falcon, realizzato per il frontman degli U2 Bono Vox e firmata da tutti e quattro i membri della band (stima: £ 120,000-180,000). Bono ordinò alla Gretsch dieci chitarre “Irish Falcon” per l’Elevation Tour del 2001 e successivamente donò questo esemplare all’asta per raccogliere fondi per la Fondazione MusiCares. Si tratta di uno dei primi prototipi originali Irish Falcons commissionati dal leader degli U2 ad essere venduti in un’asta pubblica, questa chitarra di sicuro attrarrà l’interesse degli appassionati e collezionisti del genere.

Bob Dylan è considerato il più grande cantautore del nostro tempo, ma non tutti sanno che prima di scrivere musica amò il disegno e la pittura. Dylan ha iniziato a dipingere seriamente durante il periodo di convalescenza dovuto al suo incidente motociclistico del 1966. L’asta Pop Culture presenta ai fan di Dylan la possibilità di aggiudicarsi un suo ritratto con soggetto la moglie Sara in attesa. Fu eseguito nell’estate del 1968 ed è accompagnato da una copia della autobiografia di George Harrison “I, Me, Mine”, con una fotografia in bianco e nero di Dylan e Harrison a casa di Dylan a Woodstock nel 1968 con il dipinto sullo sfondo (stima: £ 50000-70000).

Una copertina autografata dell’album “Thriller” di Michael Jackson (stima: £ 25,000-35,000). Jackson ha firmato questa copertina per un evento di beneficenza a Budapest l’8 settembre 1996 in occasione del History Tour ed ha scritto il testo della prima strofa di Thriller.

South Kensington – Christie’s bi-annual 20/21 Pop Culture sale returns to South Kensington on 16 December, presenting music and film aficionados with memorabilia associated with kings of rock, pop and Hollywood. The sale celebrates some of the greatest names of 20th century cinema through to today’s music legends, featuring costumes and film scripts, instruments and handwritten song lyrics and more. The full sale can be viewed here and will be on public exhibition at Christie’s Old Brompton Road galleries in South Kensington from 13 to 16 December 2014. Estimates range from £800 to £300,000.

An elaborate and evocative harem costume worn by Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe in a photo shoot with famed photographer Richard Avedon is a highlight of this December’s sale (estimate: £300,000-500,000). Ms. Monroe portrayed five legendary screen seductresses – Lillian Russell, Jean Harlow, Marlene Dietrich, Clara Bow and Theda Bara – in this Avedon shoot, which featured in the 22 December 1958 issue of Life magazine. The costume was worn by the actress when posing as Theda Bara, recreating Bara’s most famous role of Cleopatra. Monroe actively pursued the role of Cleopatra and sent Avedon’s portrait of her posing in this costume as Theda Bara’s Cleopatra to the President of Fox, in an attempt to persuade him that she was right for the part. Though the role went to Elizabeth Taylor, Monroe spoke of her shoot with Avedon as one of the greatest moments of her career.

Fans of The Terminator series should not miss a rare opportunity to acquire a black leather motorcycle jacket made for Arnold Schwarzenegger as the title role in the 1991 Columbia film Terminator 2: Judgement Day (estimate: £18,000-25,000, illustrated right and on page one). Several leather jackets were created for the film in progressive stages of distress, from clean through to completely shredded. This jacket, inscribed ‘ARNOLD’ in the collar lining, has numerous simulated bullet holes and is thought to have been used during filming of the Galleria mall scene, when the Terminator turns to shield John Connor from the T-1000’s gunfire and is repeatedly shot in the back.

Leading the contemporary section of the sale is a custom prototype Gretsch Irish Falcon electric guitar (estimate: £120,000-180,000), made for U2 frontman Bono and signed by all four members of the band. Bono commissioned Gretsch to build ten “Irish Falcon” guitars for U2’s 2001 Elevation tour. Since then, the Irish Falcon has remained Bono’s primary stage guitar, used during performances of Walk On and One. To recognise his accomplishments as a musician and humanitarian, Bono was honoured as 2003 MusiCares Person of the Year at a special tribute dinner, concert and silent auction at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York. He donated this guitar to the auction to raise funds for the MusiCares Foundation. One of the first original ‘prototype’ Irish Falcons custom made for Bono to come to public auction, this guitar is sure to attract interest from fans and collectors alike.

Fans of the Grateful Dead will instantly recognise Jerry Garcia’s iconic hand-painted ‘Uncle Sam’ top hat (estimate: £30,000-50,000). This hat was owned and worn by Garcia on various occasions in 1966 and ‘67 as ‘Captain Trips’, including the now famous shoots with Gene Anthony on the steps of the Grateful Dead communal house at 710 Ashbury St. and with Herb Greene at the home of Gene Estribou. Photographs from both shoots were used for the cover and liner of the Grateful Dead’s 1967 debut album, The Grateful Dead. This hat was part of Jerry Garcia’s personal wardrobe until he gave it to his friend and neighbour, Harry Tsvi Strauch. Strauch had asked to borrow the hat for a red, white & blue American flag themed window display in his shop, and Garcia insisted Strauch keep it.

Whilst Bob Dylan is primarily celebrated as the greatest singer-songwriter of our time, he began drawing in high school before he ever started writing music. Dylan started to paint seriously during his period of retreat to quiet family life in Woodstock, following his 1966 motorcycle accident. The Pop Culture sale presents Dylan fans with the opportunity to acquire an intimate portrait of his then pregnant wife, Sara, painted in the summer of 1968, soon after Dylan received his first box of oil paints (estimate: £50,000-70,000). Untitled (Sara) is accompanied by a copy of George Harrison’s autobiography I, Me, Mine, featuring a black and white photograph of Dylan and Harrison at Dylan’s home in Woodstock in 1968 that shows this painting on the wall.

The rich selection of film scripts and song lyrics presented include an extremely rare signed album cover for Michael Jackson’s 1982 album Thriller (estimate: £25,000-35,000). Jackson signed this album cover for a charity event in Budapest on 8 September 1996 during the HIStory tour and wrote the lyrics for the first verse and first line of the chorus of the title track, Thriller. Also featured are a rare set of complete, handwritten lyrics in Pete Townshend’s hand for The Who song The Acid Queen, 1969 (estimate: £15,000-25,000). Celebrated as one of the greatest and most visionary songwriters of the sixties, handwritten lyrics by Townshend are extremely rare and this is the first example to appear for sale at Christie’s.

A rare set of first, second and third draft screenplays from the 1972 Paramount Pictures film The Godfather is expected to fetch between £6,000 and £8,000. The screenplays are working copies used by the original assistant director, Stephen Kesten, with various annotations and revisions.

To celebrate the 75th year anniversary of the 1939 M.G.M. film Gone With The Wind highlights include a rare dialogue cutting continuity script used by supervising film editor, Hal C. Kern, who won the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for his work on Gone With The Wind (estimate: £7,000-9,000); a presentation script signed by producer David O. Selznick (estimate £6,000-8,000) and a 1938 edition of the book signed by members of the cast and crew including Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, Hattie McDaniel, Olivia de Havilland and Victor Fleming (estimate: £4,000-6,000).

Hollywood Memorabilia Sale at Bonhams makes $9.1milion

New York – Con una sala piena di telecamere e centinaia di persone più altre in collegamento via internet e telefono, il 24 novembre è andata in scena l’asta Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia. Sono stati aggiudicati quasi il 90% dei lotti per un valore $ 9,1 milioni.

Dal mitico Casablanca (1942) il pianoforte color salmone su cui Dooley Wilson interpreta “As Time Goes By” e in cui Humphrey Bogart nasconde i suoi documenti, ha realizzato $ 3.4 milioni. Gli stessi documenti di Humphrey Bogart sono stati venduti per $ 118.750.

Le porte esterne del Rick’s Café Américain, sono state aggiudicate a $ 115 mila. Sono visibili nella prima apparizione del caffè e tutti i personaggi principali ci passano attraverso.

Dalla trilogia de Il Signore degli Anelli , la spada di Aragorn ha raggiunto $ 437.000. La spada è stata realizzata appositamente dal maestro fabbro Peter Lyon ed è una delle sole quattro fatte per Viggo Mortensen per il film The Return Of The King.

Dal meraviglioso classico fantasy, Il mago di Oz (1939), il costume del Leone Codardo, ha realizzato $ 3 milioni. Fu creato con una vera pelle di leone e indossato da Bert Lahr per tutto il film.

 

Il vestito di prova di Dorothy è stato venduto per $ 245.000. Indossato da Judy Garland come Dorothy nel periodo di pre-produzione quando i costumi, le acconciature e tutti gli aspetti artistici sono rifiniti prima di dare inizio alle riprese.

New York— With a packed saleroom, TV cameras rolling, and hundreds of bidders tuning in via telephone and the Internet, the TCM Presents…There’s No Place Like Hollywood auction at Bonhams New York on November 24 lived up to expectations, selling almost 90% of its lots by value, and fetching $9.1 million in sales.

Highlights from the evening included:

From the classic wartime drama, Casablanca (1942)

•    The iconic piano from Rick’s Café which fetched $3,413,000: The salmon-colored piano on which Dooley Wilson plays, “As Time Goes By”, and in which Humphrey Bogart hides the precious transit papers.

•    The production-made “transit papers,” which sold for $118,750: The document that was as central to the plot as the piano.

•    The exterior doors of Rick’s Café Américain, which realized $115,000: Visible in the first appearance of the café, and through which all of the main characters pass.

•    A mimeographed manuscript of Everyone Comes To Rick’s with the Warner Bros. reader’s report, which fetched $106,250: The manuscript that convinced the studio to produce the movie.

From the Academy Award® winning trilogy, The Lord of the Rings (2001 – 2003) , and presented from the collection of internationally acclaimed actor Sir Christopher Lee and his wife, Lady Lee

•    Aragorn’s sword ‘Andúril,’ which achieved $437,000, soaring past its high estimate: The sword was specially made by master swordsmith Peter Lyon and was one of only four hero swords made for Viggo Mortensen to use in The Return Of The King.

•    Saruman’s staff, which sold for $125,000, past its high estimate: The staff was the evil wizard’s primary weapon and features heavily in the first two films.

•    The original Cowardly Lion costume, which realized $3,077,000: Created from a real lion hide and worn by Bert Lahr throughout the film

•    Bert Lahr’s working script from The Wizard of Oz, which realized $75,000: Used by the actor to create his classic character.

•    Dorothy’s dress, which sold for $245,000: A blue gingham “test” dress and pinafore worn by Judy Garland as Dorothy during the essential pre-production period, when costumes, hairstyles and all artistic aspects of moviemaking are refined prior to filming.

From the film noir, Gilda (1946)

•    Rita Hayworth’s two-piece costume achieved $161,000, many times above the high estimate: She wore this shimmering costume during her performance in a nightclub in Montevideo.

Come ho già scritto precedentemente, sono stato un fan di Steve McQueen fin da quando lo vidi per la prima volta nei suoi avventurosi film degli anni ’70. Sempre a dividersi tra le corse scapicollate in moto o in macchina e delle splendide ragazze. Aveva ragione a dire “non so se sono un pilota che fa anche l’attore o un attore che fa anche il pilota”. Quando è morto, nel 1980, ho sentito un tuffo al cuore, come se fosse mancato un parente, un vecchio amico di famiglia, il tipo che arriva sempre all’improvviso a bordo del suo bolide e che illumina la casa con i suoi racconti coinvolgendo tutti. Un personaggio strano con uno sguardo malinconico che non potevi non notare e mentre eri lì a capire se era anche un bravo attore, ti aveva già conquistato…

As I wrote previously, I have been a fan of Steve McQueen ever since I saw him for the first time in his adventurous films of the 70s. Always a divide between the races on motorbike or car and beautiful girls. He was right to say “I do not know if i’m a driver who is also an actor, or an actor who is also the driver.” When he died, in 1980, I felt a sinking heart, as if it were a non-relative, an old family friend, the guy who always comes suddenly to the edge of his car and illuminating the house with his tales involving all. A strange character with a wistful look that you could not and did not notice while you were there to see if it was also a good actor, you had already be conquered …

Today his name is universally associated with the world of engines and with them some watches now are cult among fans. Such as the Heuer Monaco.

It all started during the shooting of the film taken during the 24 hours of Le Mans 1970. In order to be credible in the best part of the character that he played, Steve has consulted a friend of his: the Swiss rider and Gulf and Heuer ambassador, Jo Siffert. At the request of McQueen, Siffert lent the actor his white suit that bore the inscription “Heuer” on the chest and the colors Gulf. To complete the look, McQueen chose to wear in the movie the new Heuer Monaco. Since then, the model has been referred to as the “McQueen Monaco”.
