Cosa ci viene in mente quando pensiamo a un orologio Longines? La risposta è semplice: un aeroplano. Quando l’aviazione è emersa dal suo sviluppo pionieristico ed è entrata nella sua epoca d’oro tra le due guerre mondiali, il volo è diventato un tema di famiglia per Longines e questo grazie ad un solo uomo: Charles Lindbergh.
Nel 1927, Charles Lindbergh lasciò Roosevelt Field a Long Island NY, e atterrò a Le Bourget, Parigi, dopo 33 ore e 32 minuti esatti. Divenne così un fenomeno internazionale, una vera celebrità. Anche con l’assenza di paparazzi, news 24/7 e di internet, lo zoo dei media discese sul nuovo fenomeno.
Charles completò l’impresa a bordo di un monoplano, lo Spirit of St. Louis, mono posto e in completa solitudine. Solo immaginare di “sorvolare” l’oceano per più di 24 consecutive senza vedere altro che una distesa infinita di mare e senza GPS o punti di riferimento fa rabbrividire anche il più scaltro e avventuriero individuo.
Per Lindberg una discrepanza di pochi secondi nel corso del tempo poteva significare una deviazione di rotta di diverse miglia. Come compensare la variazione nel tempo riuscendo sempre a mantenere la rotta con precisione? Vi aveva già pensato Philip Van Horn Weems (1889–1979) ufficiale della Marina americana e inventore di diversi strumenti di navigazione e del meccanismo orologiero Second Setting Watch o stopsecond che consentiva al pilota di arrestare rapidamente i secondi senza dover modificare le lancette ogni qual volta la posizione lo richiedeva. The dirty dozen comeback: a 1945 CYMA WWW
Nei primi anni ’40, il Ministero della Difesa britannico stabilì delle specifiche per un orologio da polso destinato alle milizie impegnate nel secondo conflitto mondiale. Le specifiche sono note come WWW (Watches Wristlet Waterproof) cioè Orologi da polso impermeabili. Dodici furono le case orologiere che risposero ai requisiti del ministero: Buren, Cyma, Eterna, Grana, Jaeger LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor e Vertex. Questi dodici orologi sono noti tra i collezionisti come la “sporca dozzina”. Curioso notare che la guerra finì prima che questi orologi potessero essere utilizzati in campo bellico poiché il conflitto terminò in anticipo rispetto alla loro distribuzione.
Dei dodici brand, il Cyma WWW è uno dei più popolari per diversi motivi. Prima di tutto adotta in un solida cassa in acciaio inox che misura 38 millimetri. Molti degli altri produttori usavano casse cromate e questo ha fatto si che gli esemplari Cyma siano più facili da trovare in buone condizioni. Da sottolineare inoltre che la cassa da 38 millimetri è la più grande della dozzina e ciò rende il Cyma più appetibile oggi che gli orologi di grandi dimensioni sono più popolari.
Generalmente gli esemplari sono con aste fisse ma non è infrequente, come in questo caso, trovarne senza. Bella la finitura satinata sulla cassa e lucida sulla lunetta che rende l’orologio gradevole al polso nonostante le sue dimensioni. Il vetro in plastica caratterizzato da una morbida curvatura è difficile da trovare in buone condizioni e reperirne uno simile può essere difficile. La corona in acciaio è da 6,6 millimetri il che rende agevole e sicuro il caricamento. Il movimento è il Cyma 234, un carica manuale a 15 rubini racchiuso in un coperchio in ferro dolce che protegge il calibro dalla polvere e dai campi magnetici.
Il quadrante, ben leggibile, è nero con indici arabi e luminescenze al Radio anche sulle lancette, secondi a ore sei, broad arrow sul quadrante come su tutti i WWW e fondello assegnato. Sembra essere sempre più difficile trovare esemplari con Radio originale in buone condizioni tanto più che il Ministero della Difesa britannico tendeva a revisionarli sostituendo il Radio con un materiale meno pericoloso.

In the early 40s, the British Ministry of Defense established the specifications for a military wristwatch for soldiers engaged in World War II. The specifications are known as WWW (Watches Wristlet Waterproof). Twelve were the watchmakers who responded to the requirements of the ministry: Buren, Cyma, Eternal, Grana, Jaeger LeCoultre, Lemania, Longines, IWC, Omega, Record, Timor and Vertex. These twelve watches are known among collectors as the “dirty dozen”. Curiously, the war ended before the watches could be used in the field of war since the conflict ended in advance of their distribution.
Among the twelve brand, Cyma WWW is one of the most popular for several reasons. First of all thanks to its solid stainless steel case measuring 38 mm. Many other manufacturers were using chrome plated cases and so the Cymas are easier to find in good condition. Also noteworthy is that the case of 38 mm is the largest of the dozen, which makes the Cyma more dediderable now that large watches are popular.
Generally the examples are with fixed rods, but it is not uncommon, as in this case, find without. Beautiful satin finish on the body and on the glossy bezel that makes the watch on your wrist pleasant despite its size. The plastic glass is characterized by soft curves is hard to find in good condition and can be difficult to find. The crown is 6.6 mm diameter which makes it easy and safe to load. The movement is the Cyma 234, a manual winding 15 jewels enclosed in a cover made of soft iron that protects it from dust and magnetic fields.
The dial, easy to read, is black with arabic index and luminescence in Radio also on the hands, seconds at six, broad arrow on the dial as on all WWW and assigned numbers on the back. It seems to be increasingly difficult to find specimens with original Radio in good condition especially since the Ministry of Defence tended to revise them by replacing the radio with a less dangerous material.

A 1969 McLaren M6GT Coupé at Bonhams Spa Classic Sale on 24 May
La battaglia tra Ford e Ferrari durante gli anni ’60 a vincere la 24 ore di Le Mans ha richiesto non solo grandi progressi innovativi, ma anche il contributo di alcuni tra i piloti più forti dell’epoca, tra questi c’era Bruce McLaren.
La sua esperienza di guida sulla Ford GT40 aveva convinto il neozelandese pilota e ingegnere del potenziale di una macchina così, una vettura che poteva essere omologata per il gruppo 4 destinato alle gare di resistenza come le 24 ore. Era giunto così all’idea di base della M6. Il risultato fu la coupé McLaren M6GT.

Un progetto che Bruce vedeva destinato anche all’uso su strada, ma un tragico destino lo aspettava dietro una curva sul circuito di Goodwood in Inghilterra, strappandolo troppo presto al mondo delle corse. Il suo nome però giungerà fino a noi glorificato dai molteplici successi che la sua scuderia raccoglierà dalla sua fondazione (1963) a oggi: 8 mondiali costruttori e 12 mondali piloti.
Purtroppo anche dopo la sua morte il progetto M6GT non fu portato a termine poiché i nuovi criteri di omologazione del gruppo 4 avrebbero costretto la neonata McLaren a competere con le Porsche 917 lasciando alla vettura inglese poche speranze di vittoria.

Questa M6GT, restaurata nel 1996, è stata recentemente in mostra negli showroom di McLaren a Newport Beach in California. La vettura è spinta da un 5.0 litri V8 Chevrolet, aspirato con un gruppo carburatori Weber 45IDA e un cambio Hewland LG600. La stima è €190,000 – 230,000.
Della M6GT furono realizzati solo due esemplari originali, quello personale di Bruce McLaren (targato “OBH 500H” ed esposto per lungo tempo presso l’Auckland Transport Museum) e un altro realizzato dalla Trojan per il pilota David Prophet, che lo portò in gara in più occasioni nel 1969.

The Ford Motor Company’s 1960s campaign to challenge Ferrari and win the Le Mans 24-Hour Race required not just innovative engineers but also the assistance of some of the world’s finest drivers, among them experienced F1 star Bruce McLaren. At around the same time New Zealander McLaren was establishing his own team in England and developing the first of the cars that would bear his name, the McLaren M1 sports-racer, developments of which, in the form of the mighty M6 and M8, would later dominate the legendary Can-Am series.
His experience of driving the Ford GT40 had convinced McLaren of the street potential of such a car, which could also be homologated for Group 4 sports car racing. What’s more, he had the ideal basis for such a project in the form of his simple yet highly effective Can-Am sports-racer, the M6. The result was the McLaren M6GT coupé. Only three cars were built, two being converted from M6 Can-Am cars and the other being built from the ground up as a closed coupé by McLaren’s partner Trojan, who were responsible for manufacturing the customer M6B cars. That car was shipped to the USA for the New York Auto Show and subsequently sold to Ted Peterson who used it as Bruce intended, on the road. Bruce too used one on the road but, sadly, there would be no more M6GTs, the project being abandoned after his tragic death in 1970.
Its accompanying FIA papers (issued November 1997) state that the example offered here was first owned by McLaren Cars followed by well-known racing driver David Prophet, who had previously raced a McLaren-Elva. Campaigned at various European circuits throughout the 1969 season, Prophet’s appears to be the only McLaren M6GT with any competition history, racing at Magny-Cours, Dijon, the Norisring, Hockenheim, Crystal Palace and Wunstorf, its only win coming at Crystal Palace in August. Two further owners are listed on the FIA papers: Nigel Allbon (1987) and John Starkey of La Jolla, California (1994).
Restored in 1996 while owned by John Starkey, the M6GT has recently been on display in the showrooms of McLaren Newport Beach in California. The car is powered by a 5.0-litre Chevrolet V8, aspirated via a quartet of Weber 45IDA carburettors and driving via a Hewland LG600 gearbox. Described by the vendor as in generally good condition, this ultra-rare sports-racing GT car is offered with the aforementioned FIA papers and a bill of sale.

A wonderful Longines “umbrella” by Oredelmondo
Questo esemplare di Longines è il più ambito e interessante dei Longines chronograph degli anni ’40.
La cassa waterproof con il fondello a scatto a forte pressione contraddistinguono questo modello che è denominato in gergo fra i collezionisti “umbrella”, proprio per la manifattura dei pulsanti a fungo o appunto a ombrello.
Nella fattispecie questo esemplare ha un rarissimo quadrante senza scale con i numeri arabi e lancette brunite al fosforo. Lo stesso orologio con referenza 2010 o 2352 è caratterizzato da un unica e specifica manifattura di quadrante dallo spessore molto alto e di diametro 29.5 mm.
Meridianae ha il piacere di presentare in ogni suo dettaglio un orologio molto ambito in questo momento dai collezionisti di Longines d’epoca.

Longines, one of the famous fashion house of Swiss watchmaking, has been rediscovered by collectors of vintage watches only about ten years by now. It’s military watches, the Lindbergh, the Weems, the Big Indian are iconic. Chronographs 13ZN and 30C, are top lots now in the auctions worldwide.
