One of Auguste Rodin’s finest sculptures, L’Eternel Printemps, was sold for £938,500 at Bonhams Impressionist and Modern Art sale on 4 February. It had been estimated at £500,000-700,000. This is a new world record at auction for a second state casting of the statue.
Created at the height of Auguste Rodin’s passionate love affair with the young Camille Claudel, L’Eternel Printemps is one of the French sculptor’s most highly acclaimed works.
Bonhams Head of Impressionist and Modern Art, India Phillips, said: “This is a wonderful price for a very special piece. Rodin poured a huge amount of emotion into L’Eternel Printemps and you can feel that in the raw physicality of the sculpture making it one of his most enduring images.”
