Bonhams will lead the Post-War and Contemporary Art season with a spectacular Andy Warhol painting of Chairman Mao, estimated at £580,000-780,000, to be offered at New Bond Street on 29 June.

The stunning, densely-textured painting comes fresh to the market having originally been handled by the artist’s legendary dealer Leo Castelli in the 1970s. The distinctive coloration and clarity of composition makes this arguably the finest of the series ever to appear at auction. Renowned as one of Warhol’s most significant, signature images, the Mao paintings feature in many of the world’s most prestigious public and private collections worldwide.

Warhol was transfixed by the People’s Republic of China in 1971. ‘I have been reading so much about China,’ he said at the time. ‘The only picture they ever have is of Mao Zedong. It’s great. It looks like a silkscreen.’ Inspired, Warhol made his first picture of the communist leader the following year. The Mao series is based on a photograph taken from the cover of The Thoughts of Chairman Mao – otherwise known as the Little Red Book, of which almost a billion copies were printed in China, leading to an acute paper shortage during the Cultural Revolution. During the early seventies, Warhol used to carry the Little Red Book around in his pocket. Eric Shiner, director of the Andy Warhol museum, describes the artist as ‘smitten with communism – with everyone wearing the same clothes and reading the same books’.

In the early 1970s, after a decade of screenprinting, Warhol returned to painting. His Maos tend to be more painterly than his earlier pop art, developing from the relentless replication of the 60s into more personalised, one-off works combining silkscreens with gestural painted additions. This particular piece has unusually thick impasto, with expressive brushwork in subtle blue hues and a halo of vivid scarlet interrupting the almost blinding vibrancy of the acid green background.

‘It is one of the finest – if not the finest – example of Warhol’s small format Maos out there,’ said Ralph Taylor, Senior Director for the Bonhams Post-War & Contemporary Art department. ‘It’s an absolute classic, brilliantly executed, with sterling provenance. Collectors who target the very best will find much to admire with this painting.’

La serie di ritratti di Andy Warhol degli anni ’80 ha visto una radicale rivalutazione negli ultimi dieci anni. Sono ora riconosciuti tra le opere più interessanti e affermate dell’artista. L’asta Post-War & Contemporary Art del 12 febbraio 2015 di Bonhams a New Bond Street sarà caratterizzata da tre di questi ritratti, ognuno raffigurante un amico dell’artista: la “socialite” Marjorie Copley, il fotografo, Robert Mapplethorpe, e l’artista di fama mondiale , Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Warhol può essere citato come colui che ha portato a nuova vita la tradizione ritrattistica trascurata nel corso del decennio che lo ha inequivocabilmente caratterizzato, e i tre lotti che Bonhams offre, ciascuno eseguito con uno strumento diverso, sono i principali simboli del suo lavoro in un momento cruciale della sua carriera.

Con la serigrafia che ritrae Marjorie Copley (1980), stimata in £ 180,000-250,000, Warhol cattura una graziosa e delicata posa della donna, con uno sguardo quasi timido a preludere un sorriso leggero, impercettibile. Questo è Warhol nella sua versione più chic.

Al tempo in cui Marjorie posò per il ritratto, aveva poco interesse per la frenetica atmosfera bohemien dello studio di Warhol, The Factory. La calma e il distacco che mostra sono evidenti ma non fanno che accrescere il fascino di questa immagine. Forse era proprio questo il messaggio che Warhol voleva trasmettere.

Il ritratto del celebre fotografo americano, Robert Mapplethorpe (divenuto famoso nel 1973 per la prima mostra personale, “Polaroids”, presso la Light Gallery di New York), del 1983, è una serigrafia unica ed è stimata in £ 50000-70000. Mapplethorpe ha condiviso un profondo interesse con Warhol nella ritrattistica, anche se il suo lavoro era incentrato sull’estetica del corpo, piuttosto che sulle celebrità ed il glamour di New York catturati da Warhol. La loro fu una vera e propria amicizia con la conseguente serie di opere reciproche. Nel 1983, Mapplethorpe fece quattro ritratti di Warhol – uno dei quali è al Tate Modern – e Warhol una collezione di serigrafie del fotografo, di cui quella in asta è una.

La Polaroid dell’artista americano, Jean-Michel Basquiat, “il James Dean dell’arte moderna” eseguito da Warhol nel 1982, è stimato £ 12,000-18,000. Warhol è stato un mentore ed un mecenate per Basquiat a partire dal 1980 fino alla morte del ragazzo per overdose di eroina nel 1987. Dopo aver conosciuto il giovane writer e pittore statunitense (uno dei più importanti esponenti del graffitismo americano, il primo a portare questa arte dalle strade alle gallerie d’arte), Warhol ha stabilito una collaborazione rappresentata da una serie di dipinti tra il 1983 e il 1985 su suggerimento del mercante d’arte svizzero Bruno Bischofberger, portando alla notorietà il talento del giovane ma sfortunato artista americano.

Three portraits from the artist’s most celebrated 1980s series across three distinct media: acrylic on canvas, silkscreen and Polaroid.

Andy Warhol’s series of portraits from the 1980s have enjoyed a radical reappraisal during the last decade. They are now recognised as some of the artist’s most compelling and accomplished works. The Post-War & Contemporary Art auction on 12 February 2015 at Bonhams New Bond Street will feature three of these portraits, each depicting a friend of the artist: the socialite, Marjorie Copley, the photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe, and the world-renowned artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Portraits of important figures in fashionable circles have been a cornerstone of artistic production for centuries, from Titian’s depictions of the rich and powerful to John Singer Sargent’s paintings of society beauties. Warhol can be credited with reviving the neglected tradition of portraiture during the 1980s – a decade which he made his own – and the three lots on offer at Bonhams, each executed in a different medium, are prime examples of his portrait work at a pivotal moment of his career.

The Portrait of Marjorie Copley (1980), estimated at £180,000-250,000, is a remarkably elegant acrylic and silkscreen ink portrait. In a departure from the bold images in brazen Pop Art colours which dominated his work during this period, Warhol captures Copley in a graceful, delicate pose, her long hair running down her back, her mouth bearing the slight suggestion of a smile, and renders her in a subdued palette with just the occasional dash of vivid acrylic. This is Warhol at his most chic and stately.

Warhol knew Marjorie through the celebrated American artist, William Copley, to whom she was married at the time the work was painted, but Marjorie had little interest in the frenzied, bohemian scene of Warhol’s studio, The Factory. Her calmness and detachment is evident in the portrait, which rejects the bright chaos of other portraits; only her piercing blue eyes and cherry-red lips are accentuated, and the lines of her body and face are gentle. It is, says Martina Batovic, Specialist in the Contemporary Department at Bonhams, ‘a simple yet exquisite portrait’.

Warhol’s portrait of the American photographer, Robert Mapplethorpe, from 1983, is a unique screenprint on lenox museum board, and is estimated at £50,000-70,000. Mapplethorpe shared Warhol’s deep interest in portraiture, although his work focussed on the aesthetics of the anatomised body, rather than the celebrities and glamour of 1980s New York captured by Warhol. A genuine friendship and intimacy developed between the two artists, resulting in a series of reciprocal works on art. In 1983, Mapplethorpe made four portraits of Warhol – one of which hangs in the Tate Modern – and Warhol created a collection of silkscreens of the photographer, of which the present work is one. As such, it is part of the narrative which brought together two pioneers of American art.

The Polaroid print of the American artist, Jean-Michel Basquiat, which was made by Warhol in 1982, is estimated at £12,000-18,000. Warhol was a mentor for Basquiat during the 1980s until his death in 1987, having met the young painter at a New York restaurant in 1980, and the pair worked on a series of collaborative paintings between 1983 and 1985 at the suggestion of the Swiss art dealer, Bruno Bischofberger. The photograph shows a fresh-faced Basquiat, his hair in trademark bunches, staring confrontationally into the camera.

The Original Apple Watch. Pure Pop art

Il primo orologio Apple è praticamente dietro l’angolo, in quanto si prevede che sarà sul mercato entro la prossima estate. Tuttavia ciò che molti ignorano è che negli anni ’90 la azienda di Cupertino aveva già pensato a qualcosa di simile o meglio di più convenzionale: un orologio analogico. Ma la cosa più curiosa è che tra gli anni ‘80 e ‘90 la Apple aveva a catalogo altri gadget a completare il suo merchandising come pantaloncini, occhiali da sole ed altri beni associabili ad una vera e propria campagna di globalizzazione del proprio marchio.

 

Lo scorso agosto è riemerso in tutto il suo look anni ’90 quello che potrebbe essere considerato il primo Apple Watch della storia. Ovviamente, questo non ha nulla a che fare con lo Smart Watch che sta per invadere il mercato con due dimensioni di schermo e l’integrazione con l’iPhone. Infatti si tratta di un classico orologio al quarzo con lunetta blu in alluminio, quadrante bianco con quattro indici tondi in metallo cromato, il vecchio logo Apple ad ore dodici e lancette in stile Pop Art. Il tutto chiuso da un cinturino in gomma con incisa la scritta MacOs.

Questo gadget faceva parte di un offerta di upgrade del sistema operativo del Mac alla versione 7.5. Chi acquistava il pacchetto aveva l’orologio in omaggio e per questo le unità in circolazione non sono così numerose. Il collezionista che astutamente lo ripropone proprio quando sta per uscire il nuovo Apple Watch si aspetta certamente di realizzare un ottimo profitto.

The first Apple watch is practically around the corner, as it is expected that it will be on the market by next summer. But what many do not know is that in the 90s the Cupertino company had already thought of something similar or more conventional: an analog watch. But the most curious thing is that between the 80s and 90s, the company had to catalog other gadgets to complete his merchandising such as shorts, sunglasses and other assets associated with a real campaign of globalization of its brand.

Last August has resurfaced in all its 90s look what could be considered the first Apple Watch of history. Obviously, this has nothing to do with the Smart Watch that is about to flood the market with two screen sizes and the integration with the iPhone. In fact it is a classic quartz watch with blue aluminum bezel, white dial with four indexes round chrome metal, the old Apple logo at twelve o’clock and hands in pop art style.

This gadget was part of a bid to upgrade the operating system on the Mac to version 7.5. Who bought the package had the watch as a gift and as a consequence the units in circulation are not so many. The collector who cunningly proposing it right when is coming out the new Apple Watch certainly expect that the price will only go up.

Andy Wahrol Image once owned by U2 for sale at Bonhams

Una delle rarissime bozze di Andy Warhol relative alla campagna per il lancio dell nuova Coca-Cola (New Coke) del 1985, sarà venduta all’asta Bonhams “Prints and Multiples sale” a Londra il 9 dicembre prossimo. E’ stimata £ 15.000-20.000.

L’opera fu commissionata per la copertina di Giugno 1985 della rivista americana Time ma non è stata poi utilizzata. Non essendo quindi mai stata realizzata, esiste solo in forma di bozza il che la rende estremamente rara. Successivamente il disegno è stato acquistato per la collezione del gruppo rock irlandese U2.

La Coca Cola ha avuto un significato particolare per Warhol che l’ha vista non solo come una trionfale opera di marketing e del consumismo di massa, ma anche come simbolo dello spirito americano di uguaglianza. Una volta disse: “La cosa fantastica di questo paese è che in America i consumatori più ricchi comprano in sostanza le stesse cose di quelli più poveri. Una Coca è una Coca e nessuna somma di denaro può ottenere una Coca migliore di quella che sta bevendo un barbone all’angolo della strada”.

Anche un altra serigrafia di Warhol “Banana from around” del 1966, è in vendita. L’immagine è stata notoriamente utilizzata sulla copertina dell’album dei The Velvet Underground “The Velvet Underground and Nico” ed è stimata a £ 5.000-7.000. L’album è stato il primo dei Velvet Underground e, anche se troppo radicale per essere un successo commerciale nel momento in cui è uscito, ha ormai raggiunto quasi uno status leggendario. Il gruppo infatti è stato considerato come la house band dello studio di Warhol (the Factory) e l’artista non solo ha progettato la copertina dell’album, ma è si è accreditato anche come produttore.

One of a handful of very rare proof impressions of Andy Warhol’s New Coke from 1985 is to be sold at Bonhams Prints and Multiples sale in London on 9 December. It is estimated at £15,000-20,000.

The image was commissioned for the June 1985 cover of the American magazine Time but in the event was not used. It was never a published edition and only exists in proof form making it extremely rare. The piece was once owned by the Irish rock band U2, and is unique, being the only one printed in this colour combination.

Coca Cola had a particular meaning for Warhol who saw it not only as a triumph of mass marketing and consumerism but also as a symbol of the American spirit of equality.  He once said, “What’s great about this country is that America started the tradition where the richest consumers buy essentially the same things as the poorest. A Coke is a Coke and no amount of money can get you a better Coke than the one the bum on the corner is drinking “

Another Warhol screenprint – Banana from around 1966 – is also for sale. The image was famously used – at a different angle – on the album cover of the Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico and is estimated at £5,000-7,000. The album was the Velvet Underground’s first and although too radical both musically and thematically to be a commercial success at the time it has now achieved near legendary status. The group was regarded as the house band of Warhol’s studio – the Factory – and the artist not only designed the album’s cover but is credited as the record’s producer.
